If you have a mountain based charity challenge coming up, or if you are planning a walking break to an area where the terrain is a little more arduous than gentle rolling hills – we have the perfect course to help you be fully prepared. While there is no substitute for actual mountain experience, there are ways in which you can minimise your chances of getting lost or hurt and maximise your enjoyment and chance of achieving your goal in less mountainous locations.
The mountains and hills can be unpredictable with changes in weather and conditions underfoot often occurring at an alarming rate. Worryingly, 85% of people do not know the correct procedures for dealing with an emergency in the hills.
Our one-day course covers a variety of practical skills and advice to enable you to feel confident about venturing into the mountains. If you are part of a group, we are happy to tailor the day to your specific event/area you are visiting. Just let us know the activity details and call to discuss your requirements.
The practical course will cover topics such as:
- Being physically prepared
- Managing poor visibility and night navigation
- Mountain terrain and understanding the weather
- Essential navigation skills
- The correct equipment
- How to avoid potential risks and hazards
- What to do in an emergency
Duration: One day (typically 09.30-16.30 – but we sometimes have a later start time to incorporate some night navigation).
Location: The West Sussex section of the South Downs or the Surrey Hills (or a location to suit you).
- Use of maps and compass
- Full instruction by MTA qualified leader
- 15% discount from Cotswold Outdoor
